Log alpha-36-Bravo, Brother Lexicanum Aktaion, Minotaurs Chapter, on Deathwatch Duty
Thought for the day: Heresy begets retribution
Our journey towards the Deathwatch strike cruiser Litany of Redemption has been interrupted. We have dropped out of the warp in the Orion system, on a planet called Nalmondar that has recently lost contact with the imperium.
Initial forays by the Ultramarines chapter seem to have gone awry, and the new recruits of the Deathwatch, assembled in two combat squads (team Deadhowl and team Speer), are the nearest available troops. Watch-captain Nathaniel Fierce has given us a short briefing and detailed the disposition of both squads, choosing a balanced approach, since we don’t know what we may encounter.
Our squad consists of a team leader, brother Deadhowl - a “blackshield”, a rank only found within the Deathwatch - brother Ahri, a Dark Angel devastator; brother Noctis, of the Blood Angels; brother Torgaddon, an Iron Hands apothecary, and myself, providing psychic support and the staying power of the thrice-blessed tactical dreadnought armour, Indomitable.
We were deposited on the planet’s surface by Thunderhawks, our rhinos being dropped approximately 1.5 kilometers outside of the city walls. Our main purpose was recon by force, maintaining constant vigilance and contact with the watch-captain. Communication was patchy at best, with heavy atmospheric interference.
As we approached the outer rim of the city, our vanguard, brother Noctis, was despatched forward as a scouting element, only to be jumped by a number of Orks hiding between the buildings. Considering their preponderance for stealth, I surmise them to be of the ‘blood axe’ clan. Still, as soon as battle was joined, their stealth was abandoned in favour of the usual orkish agressiveness. We rushed in to defend our battle-brother, triggering more ambush attempts from the Orks, our auto-senses and superior skill allowing us to maintain a coherent formation and fend off the initial wave.
Surrounded as we were, our blessed armour and faith in the emperor saw us through, though the ork elite caste - I believe they are called ‘Nobz’ in their primitive tongue- caused grievous wounds with their Power Klaws, our team leader knocked down by the sheer brutality of the attack, despite his almost preternatural skill with a blade. Thankfully, my studies in Biomancy and apothecary Torgaddon’s efforts were sufficient to keep our teammates in the action. Brother Ahri provided heavy covering fire, taking away the Orks' greatest strength, their numbers, and as soon as the charge was broken, it was only a matter of time before we were victorious.
Near the largest concentration of Orks, we also found a disabled Ultramarines rhino, which seemed to be in relatively good shape, and conveyed this information to our watch-captain, so that the Chapter might recover its beloved vehicle. The fact that the orks had made no attempt to loot it suggests that the fighting must have been over only very recently.
While we were thusly occupied, team Speer stumbled upon the enemy Warboss and managed to take him down, though not without suffering severe injuries from the creature’s massive Power Klaw. Unfortunately, they then managed to immobilize their rhino on some tank traps, leaving us to forge on ahead. Team Speer protected our right flank and further explored the ruins, looking for clues as to what might have happened on this planet.
After our altercation with the Orks and reporting our findings, we moved onto the city proper, recovering some valuable supplies along the way: a device that projects a forcefield, a multi-melta, and, the Emperor be praised, a cyclone missile launcher, allowing for a withering hail of firepower.
Upon reaching the outer perimeter, we were informed that there were guardsmen outside of the city proper, assaulting the city walls which were occupied by the Eldar, that most devious and deceitful race. Apparently, the PDF (Planetary Defense Force) had been ousted from the city: not a good sign. The PDF regiment did not respond to our hails , so we decided to move up with care, lest we be shot upon by our allies.
As we investigated some supplies and cautiously approached the city, our rhino was ambushed by another mob of Orks, who had managed to remain hidden until now. Our retaliation was swift and bloody, but we were not able to save the rhino, its side carved open by yet another Ork with a power Klaw – the high propensity of Nobs probably due to the presence of their Warboss.
Upon reaching the city walls proper, it took several efforts before the guardsmen finally acknowledged us, after which we were informed that the Eldar had taken the city from within, and that the PDF troopers had been pinned between the city walls and the marauding Orks, beset on both sides. The guardsmen were at the end of their strength having fought for days without rest, as they had been unable to communicate their plight due to the atmospheric interference we had also experienced.
For now, we are gathering more information, preparing our next set of moves. Communication with the battle cruiser has been unsuccessful due to a psychic disturbance, most likely caused by the Eldar, worsening the usual atmospheric issues this planet is known for. Apothecary Torgaddon is tending to the wounded, though none seem to be too seriously hurt.
Brother Aktaion out.
